Single Vehicle Collision on Tsing Sha Highway [23 Nov 2012]

On 21 November 2012, a light van crashed onto an unmanned toll kiosk at the toll plaza of the Tsing Sha Highway. The kiosk was severely damaged and the van caught fire immediately resulting in the death of the driver. This incident demonstrates a number of safety hazards at toll plazas in Hong Kong:

    • High speed of vehicles through toll lanes (a general comment, not commenting on this event as investigation is still going on)
    • Inadequate passive safety design considerations which endanger both vehicle occupants and staff
