Roadside Safety Case Studies -- 2009-03-14
Route 1 near Hung Hom Railway Station
This site is located on the outer bend of a high capacity trunk road. The roadside is on top of a 6 metre high vertical retaining wall below which lies the main tracks of the MTR East Rail. Containment capacity of the upstream W-beam barrier is grossly insufficient. The W-beam barrier is not connected with the concrete profile safety barrier.
Route 8 North Lantau Highway
This is a high capacity expressway with 110km/h speed limit. Use of vertical footpath kerbs on the expressway is not appropriate. The W-beam safety barrier laps over the concrete profile safety barrier in the wrong direction and they are not connected. An errant vehicle colliding with the W-beam safety barrier could be guided to hit the ramped-down lead terminal of the concrete profile safety barrier and launched into the air, resulting in severe casualties.
